Who we are
The Last Scribe (Play the Bible) is a Bible adventure game played in the browser at playthebible.quest. Write to us about anything on this page at privacy@email.playthebible.app. We answer within 10 days.
What we keep
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| Username and password (stored scrambled, never readable) | To sign you in |
| Your email address (grown-ups only) | To sign in, reset a password, and send receipts |
| Year of birth (not the day or month) | To know whether a player is a child, and when they are not |
| A parent's email address (children only) | To ask the parent, and to send them their child's password resets |
| Play: stories and lands visited, quiz answers, experience, coins, achievements, items, friends, parties, blocks and reports | To run the game and keep your progress |
| If you choose: a church and a country; grown-ups may add a town | For the churches board and church weeks |
| If you choose: a device's notification address | To send the reminders you turn on |
| Your email, if you join the waitlist on this site | To send your invitation. It is removed when you ask. |
| Feedback you send us | To fix and improve the game |
| Sign-in sessions with the internet (IP) address and browser they came from | To keep accounts safe |
| Your time zone, sent by your browser | To open weekly gatherings and the Sabbath at your own hours |
We never ask for a real name, home address, phone number, photo or voice, and we never know your precise location.
What other players see
- Your username, level, rank, what your Scribe wears, and up to three achievements you choose to show. A child's username is never shown: other players see "Scribe" and a number.
- Players cannot type to each other. They speak only with a fixed list of phrases and gestures.
- Nobody is told which church you chose.
- You choose who sees you: everyone, friends and church, or just your party. Children choose between friends and their party.
Who else handles it
We do not sell anything we keep, show no adverts, and never use what we keep to follow you across other sites. These companies run parts of the game for us, and handle only what that part needs:
- Railway (servers) and Neon (database): everything above is stored there.
- Cloudflare: delivers the game, its pictures and its voices.
- Stripe: takes payment. It has the payer's email and card; we never see the card. For a child's account, Stripe is given the parent's email, never the child's.
- Resend: sends our emails.
- Sentry: tells us when the game breaks. It is sent no names or emails.
- Plausible: counts visits without cookies and without telling one visitor from another across days.
- Your browser's maker (Apple, Google, Mozilla, Microsoft) delivers the notifications you turn on.
We give information to others only if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
Children under 13
We follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). When a player's year of birth means they may be under 13:
- We ask only for a username, a password, the year of birth and a parent's email. We never ask for the child's own email.
- We email the parent. Until the parent confirms, the child plays alone: nobody else can see them or play with them.
- When the parent confirms, we send a second email confirming it, with a link the parent keeps.
- With that link, at any time, a parent can download a copy of everything we keep about their child, withdraw consent (the child plays alone again), or delete the account and everything in it.
- If no parent confirms within 14 days, the account and everything in it are deleted.
- A child cannot buy a subscription until their parent has confirmed.
- A child cannot write feedback. They can only choose from a short list of ready-made messages.
- Nothing a child types or chooses is shown to other players in a way that says who they are. Choosing a church never lets more people see a child.
A parent who did not get the email, or who has a question, can write to privacy@email.playthebible.app.
How long we keep it
| What | For how long |
|---|---|
| An account and its play | Until it is deleted |
| A child's account no parent confirmed | 14 days from asking the parent |
| A deleted account | Erased at once. Copies in the database host's backups are gone within 7 days. |
| Feedback | A year |
| Sign-in sessions | Until you sign out, or they expire |
| Error reports and server logs | 30 days |
| Records of payments | As long as tax law requires, at Stripe |
Payments and deleted accounts
Deleting an account cancels its subscription at once, and the time left on it is not refunded. One exception: a child cannot buy a subscription until a parent confirms the account, so if a child's account that a parent never confirmed is deleted after a payment, that payment is refunded in full.
Keeping it safe
Connections are encrypted, passwords are stored scrambled, staff tools need a staff account, and only the people who run the game can reach the database. If something we keep about you is ever exposed, we will tell you.
Your choices
- See and change your profile, and who sees you, in the game's settings.
- Download a copy of everything we keep about you, or delete your account and everything in it, under "Your account" in the game's profile settings. Deleting cancels any subscription; the time left on it is not refunded.
- To correct something, or for anything else, write to privacy@email.playthebible.app.
Changes
If we change what we keep about children, or who handles it, we will ask parents again before it applies to their child. Other changes are shown here with a new date.
